A30 Chiverton to Carland Cross

Role: Senior Engineer (PJ Davidson) & Site Engineering Consultant (Costain) Duration: October 2022 – April 2024 (18-Month Project Span) Project Type: Upgrading the A30 single carriageway between Chiverton Cross and Carland Cross roundabouts. Played a pivotal role in the delivery of the A30 Chiverton to Carland Cross infrastructure upgrade, operating as a Senior Engineer for PJ Davidson before being directly engaged by the principal contractor, Costain. Bridged the gap between technical design requirements and on-site reality within a complex, greenfield environment. Applied extensive expertise in highway design and execution to ensure realistic compliance and "Right First Time" delivery. Execution & Deliverables (PJ Davidson) - Directed the precise setting out and quality verification for substantial linear infrastructure, including 12 miles of Concrete Step Barrier, 6.7 miles of Surface Water Channel, and 5.1 miles of Slot Drain. - Managed the completion and rigorous sign-off of all quality checksheets, ensuring thorough data integrity for project handover. - Leveraged advanced Leica machine control systems, consistently achieving setting-out accuracies within 5mm to maintain strict design tolerances. - Generated comprehensive site documentation and maintained strict adherence to quality assurance protocols to establish an auditable trail of evidence. Technical Challenges & Engineering Solutions - Demonstrated proactive problem-solving skills by identifying and rectifying significant design inaccuracies prior to permanent works execution. - Discovered and isolated critical flaws in the provided design data, notably identifying sections where the road's crossfall was incorrectly modelled with a 2.8% fall. - Improvised practical engineering solutions by recalculating the geometry and adjusting the vertical alignment and height of the concrete central wall on-site. - Reviewed and validated these adjusted construction methodologies, ensuring the core design intent translated safely and accurately to site execution despite the initial data discrepancies. Expanded Scope & Programme Management (Costain) - Subsequently contracted by Costain to lead critical preparatory works, specifically overseeing the sub-base level tolerances essential for the central barrier's installation. - Aided in creating and maintaining project programme updates and critical path documents. - Fostered continuous collaboration with site managers to optimize resource allocation, anticipate hold-ups, and mitigate delays across the 18-month programme.
